Women’s liberation has been on the scene for way more than a century. However, in most countries of the world it has had absolutely no impact on the everyday life of women. They also do not even dare to demand equal wages because they are happy if there are wages at all. Equal rights might be written somewhere in the constitution, but calling a lawyer costs money that nobody can spare, and going to court means confronting male judges who have little interest to put in a word for a woman’s pleas.
This book is a collection of episodes from around the world. It was written over a period of twenty years and demonstrates that a woman’s live is only as good as the man she has teamed up with. Because it is still a man’s world, and women have little to no impact on the world they are living in. Most of them were brought up by a mother who knew the best thing a woman can do is to find a man who is halfway decent and does not beat them too often. They have suffered under the rule of a father who believes that a woman must be kept on a short leash and takes his belt, if his daughter wants more freedom than he is willing to grant her.
In most countries, raising children means little more than telling them what to do, praising them for a well-done job, and whipping them for any failure, negligence, disobedience and rebelliousness. Children are expected to conform to the rules adults have established for them and especially girls are considered well-behaved if stripping and whipping them is not required too often.
Especially in the eastern part of the world, nobody asks a young lady whom she wants to marry and spend her entire life with. Such far-reaching decisions are made by parents and the girl is expected to accept their will and love the man who was chosen for her. The very same is true of the Arab world where the opinion of a woman still means next to nothing.
When reading this book, you will be confronted with many slappings, whippings and beatings of young girls, teenagers and adult women. You can rest assured that each of the episodes presented here was reported somewhere in the news media. However, the author took the liberty to put a plain news article into a more detailed description of the actual event. He also included additional information to help the reader to understand circumstances.
“Subjecting Them” might trigger your sensuous impulses. But it is still a book about reality and contains many episodes from real life.
